|
Promotion is full of myths and half truths, as no one really knows how the search engines work as it is a closely guarded secret. It is also prone to random events.
For example a term we promote on downsizer which was number 1 and 2 with google, dropped drastically in the rankings last week, so far down we could not find it. But is now back in the top 2 slots.
If you try and make sense of this type of thing you will run around in ever decreasing circles.
But there are a few solid rules to follow:
Get back links to your site
A link from another site to your own counts for something. It count for more though with relevent "anchor text". e.g.
https://www.marsjupiter.com/
is a link to my site which is good for me.
Web site promotion
has anchor text that is better.
The downsizer web ring helps you create such links.
Pages with content optimized around the key words you want to promote.
There are a few basic rules about doing this. But you can spend forever following arcane tips for optimization. You may then find as has recently happened google changes the rules and over optimized pages get dumped. I therefore advise people to try and create good content that will last for all time, and just follow some basic rules.
- Use a relevent page title.
- Use headers with your keywords.
- Overuse your keywords a little in the text.
Use optimised technology
Use technology for your site that is search engine friendly. Once you get beyond basic html pages, you may get systems that make your site easy to maintain, but are bad news with search engines.
For example old versions of Mambo, did not even sensibly give pages a good title. This was search engine death. Equally a phpbb forum by default uses poor titles.
The tricks to optimise your site technology are non trivial, and are an area where it is probably worth getting an expert to help set your site up. Once the technology is set up correctly, you can maintain it yourself.
Pimp your site
There is no substitute for effort. If you register on a forum you may gain a link to your site, which is good, if you make the effort to post, you may gain links with anchor text via your forum signature, but more to the point if you are posting in a relevent way, it will encourage people to visit directly without relying on the search engines. Just be careful about how you promote in this fashion, or you will get a bad reputation. |
