I am thinking specifically of going down the ombudsman route, and tips or advice?

Money Saving Expert will be your friend... IIRC they have some template letters that might be handy. Kate

Bank charges, no, PPI, yes. MSE is the way forward. They will help you navigate the banks stalling tactics, and provide you with a forum of supportive people when it's not looking great. And, ignore TD when he says you should pay them anyway.

Thanks. I have been on money saving and it is pretty good isn't it? It is actually eldest student child who needs to do the claiming back. He is doing the PPI himself. I always ignore TD

The MSE is a good place to start but don't use standard letters, from the FOS:

Not quite but I am surprised many don't sort themselves out sooner and I think that's one thing the FOS will take into account.

I'd guess that a student would have a much better chance of proving a case and proving financial hardship. Again from the FOS:

I've had an offer from Tesco offering to repay half my unwarranted insurance payments as they've lost the records previous to 2003 on a card taken out in 1997. Luckily I never throw anything away

Make sure they pay interest, too. I think 8% was the accepted rate. Compound.

My son went overdrawn... he was charged �75 He had a letter warning him the money would be taken from his account but didnt say anything to me about it until the money was actually taken out a month later Probs too late to say/do anything now but it makes me mad... �75.... how can they justify a charge like that?

He wont have any problem claiming financial hardship. Through no fault of his own, he was off the course for about 8 months. In that time, he had no income. Charges just snowballed, and they failed to stop standing orders he asked to be stopped. So month after month, he incurred charges for them as well.
He is now back on the course, and has a well paid job. The nice bank want to give him a consolidation loan, to clear his debts to them, They wont do even that for another few months, until he can prove regular income. In the meantime, they have generously "slowed" charges to a mere �150 a month.

Yes the extras double the amount. When we add the other 6 years the charges will be more than they ripped my company off for a few years back. I'm happy about that

I wouldn't accept it, if it was miss-sold, they have to repay the lot, with interest at 8%.

I claimed bank charges back via the FO, they did all the paperwork and wrote to them. It was very successful
