Here, hopefully, is a piccie of our new hens, after picking them up from Lincolnshire. As you know they are ex-battery hens and came from a lovely lady called Amanda Jennings who rescued them.

They have now been with us a fortnight and day by day are looking better. Despite a slow start they are now averaging 5 eggs a day - not bad from 7 ladies who were destined to be made into chicken pies 4 weeks ago!

Hi Gertie, Im sure they will be very happy hens, we rescued some from a facility that tests on hens and we couldn't have better hens they are now well settled and total pets and get on well with all the various breeds of poultry we have, and as for laying I was quite surprised as they lay all the year through and seem to have adjusted well to a free range lifestyle.

They're lovely Gertie. I wonder who's happier. You for rescuing them or them for being saved?

Wait till they've regrown their plumage!...My ex battery's were really friendly too. Nice enclosure by the way. Lundy do it?

Are they acting like chickens now? Our hens took a while to learn to be chickens when we got them. They were not that sure of worms, slugs, snail etc when they were 12-15 week olds. Withing a few months all that changed and they soon became little 'hen-vacs'.

Life's a learning curve not only for the girls but us as well.

Lundy made the hen house and the enclosure. He constructed the hen house in our garden and we transported it round to the allotment a few days before the girls arrived. The enclosure he made into panels, the wire goes just over a foot underground and he then screwed them into place. It's not bad, certainly a much bigger space than they have been used to - may enlarge it in time.

The enclosure actually has some nice grass and weeds, unfortunately when we put up the enclosure we ended up covering it in earth!

As for the hens, some still huddle together on an evening in their nesting box, but they are getting better at using their perches. They have adapted really well, there is a 'pecking order' and we were suprised at how quick they were rooting around for insects, etc.

Lundy has gone from a 'we are only getting because you want them' to 'how are my girlies? aren't you gorgeous!' guy who spends ages with them.

Some time this century, spent all day Saturday viewing, got another tomorrow, and one on Wednesday. No idea yet.
