Thanks, why did I think you were in Ludlow? Is there a spare key under a plant pot?
Any recomendations for food. Mid range nothing too fancy |
Nope, Hereford, about 4 miles out of the centre.
Food.
https://www.burgershop.co/ is a great burger shop.
https://www.pontevecchiohereford.co.uk/index.htm fabulous Italian, but if you're only here tonight, I think it's shut.
https://www.bunch-of-carrots.co.uk/ not far out of town.
https://www.lichfieldvaultshereford.co.uk/ is a pub in Church Street which weirdly does great Greek food, (and more standard stuff too). There's also a little place three or four doors up called The Stewing Pot. Think Bistro.
Just opened this week is a Tapas bar Here which is supposed to be really, really good (well known local caterer is the chef) which is opposite The Left Bank, on Bridge Street. The pub next door, the Black Lion is a-maz-ing, if only for the decor. https://blacklionhereford.net/ No idea what the food is like.
We have a new city centre retail park, if you have no soul, but need Nandos/wagamama/zizzi/stuff like that.
The Spread Eagle, on King Street is a pub with food, and good enough.
The Den, on West Street gets good reviews, but I've not had time to go yet.
And The Thai on Wye, in the same Street will be great, and you will eat alone, almost certainly, on a Monday in Hereford.
https://www.gilbies.co.uk/ is a bar down a tiny alley near to McDonalds in the High Street. Sharing platters, tapas, nibbles, main menu, and beer made from strawberries. Vino collapso on offer. Anyone in there over about 6 foot and making you feel insecure and weak works for the SAS. They'll be wearing boots, not trainers, and North Face jackets. I just hope they're less conspicuous at work.
All the pubs will let kids in.
And, for a pint, you need to find either The Barrels https://www.wyevalleybrewery.co.uk/pubs/the-barrels-hereford/ which is the best pub in Hereford, or https://www.beerinhand.co.uk/ which you will love. Assuming you love beer, served in an old laundrette. Genuinely, it's worth finding. Dog, child and women friendly, no food until the weekend, but lots and lots of real ale and cider, served from racking that used to hold tumble driers. No music, TV, gaming machines, pool, or people in sportswear. Might be someone with a guitar. Or a fiddle.
If you must have a curry, find the Glass Tandoor on Commercial Street. It's upstairs, above the Golden Galleon. But, beware, we don't have much of an Indian population locally, so the general standard is low.
For Chinese, Hum Ming Garden, on Ledbury Road. Possibly closed Mondays.
If you require a brunch time snack, seek out All Saints Church in the city centre. You can avoid the God stuff, and have great bacon and eggs on toast. https://www.cafeatallsaints.co.uk/
If you have specific dietary requirements, eg vegetarian, GF, peanut mentality, bring sandwiches. |

Don't stay in the central Hereford Travel Lodge if you want to sleep.
Yes, it is conveniently located, has parking and so forth, but every time we've stayed there, the restaurant on the ground floor seems to have a hen party.
We stay at the Grafton branch - the pub next door serve Brains beer. |
My son, bless him, is 18, and part of two local rugby clubs. They tell me the restaurant below the Travel Lodge is ace. Curry, rice and a pint for a fiver. And it's always full of his mates.
So, I apologise. If it's any consolation, I've been using a chainsaw and axe for the last three hours, just beneath his bedroom window, and I think he's getting very grumpy with me.
ETA: The restaurant is now shut due to 'noise restrictions and lease issues'.
ETA 2: Yes, he's up now, and quite grumpy. Apparently, it's been really noisy since very early on (about 9.30). |
