Just had to share this with you - just got sight of land reg for smallholding moving to and we have a free turf bank of about 3 acres!!!
It seems that in times gone by smallholders had strips of turf bank which they harvested and dried for their winter fuel - how cool is that!!
Sadly turf bank as far as we can tell by rough locations appears to be gorse and bullrushes - are we buying futures???
you could be right there! Having been on the edge of the lake for several million years - or so I recall - it is rich black crumbly soil with added calcium - shells!!
Not sure if there are restrictions on what allowed too do with it - Beehives planned!!
About 24 acres excellent pasture land around ancient cottage (mobile homes here we come!!) and down the lane the 3 acre strip of turf bog...keep me quiet for a while!!
Currently three ponies, two warmblood broodlmares, lots of chickens ( depends on hatchlings and husband) three dogs(pups due now..)two goats, two cats, two rabbits.....
Wish list:
3 Dexter cattle, 2 saddlebacks and a few lambs for rearing...
As soon as avian threat over the pond will acquire geese and ducks....
err no husband not out to grass just hell bent on eating a chicken thats got gender issues!!
As for angry wimmin the whole thread made me uneasy - I am not angry, although picking up from bathroom floor makes me mad - but you make take what you can and get on with life - imho of course....
I was impressed by the knowledgable arguments put pro/con though
p s i 'm not sure how easy to Dexters in Ireland - import options anyone know? Got a mare coming back from stud in autumn guess I can't just throw a couple on the back of the wagon then....
Can you get Herefords there? Or Ruby Red Devons (??) The bloke next door keeps Herefords and he says they're dead easy and very tasty, he gets his killed at about 18 months. Is there an Irish smallholders favourite?
You lucky thing Exiles. The turbary rights for our smallholding were sold off long before we got here. OH would give his eye teeth for a bit of bog but it's near impossible to buy up here in Donegal. Have you checked if you're due any compensation if you don't intend cutting the turf. I'd have beehives on bog if we could get it. Blueberries and cranberries might grow well too. You'd better get in plenty of insect repellant though as it swarms with midges for most of the year.
Good luck with the mobile home, I was a reluctant trailer trash dweller but it's actually not been as bad as I feared.
OOH Thanks Gai, makes me feel much better, other half currently scouring the land for mobile homes - and yes he's been in Donegal, Kildare and Wicklow now off to Blanchardstown.....could be interesting one. Trouble is I really want a 12' wide cos have two kids and feel like need a bit of space? How did you get on?
