I think there are a number of recipes for soap, but not heard of anyone making carbolic. Most people go for rather nicer smells than that I think. By the looks of it the original carbolic soap contained phenols which are now not thought to be very good for us and are derived from coal tar; carbolic acid of cressilic acid I think was the other one.

Carbolic has a lovely smell. My mum's choice of soap when she used to stick 3 of us in the bath together.

The smell of carbolic soap reminds me of my Grandad when he came from work.....

Thanks all.

I was a lady down the allotment was after making some but said she was unable to find a recipe on the net, so I thought I'd ask here.

Yes DPack, I still use coal tar soap. It's great for my greasy skin.

The geography teacher from when I was at school used to make anyone who swore in class, stick carbolic soap in their mouth. Surely there is a claim there somewhere?

Wrights Coal Tar Soap now contains tea tree oil rather than carbolic and similar acids as they are now banned from all but prescription medicines. The smell is 'made up' so it seems like the original.

You might suggest the lady tries a basic soap formula using tea tree oil. It won't smell the same, but should have the same antiseptic properties.

Sad when a missing 't' changes the meaning altogether, but I agree with Dpack; a tiara isn't the best allotment wear.
