Finally proved what i had been suspecting , one of the girls are eating their own eggs. They get well fed so i dont understand it. Help.

I have the same trouble, Andy. i think they just get a taste for them. I've put a golf ball in (as someone suggested here) and have had no pecked eggs since, but that isn't a great indication as they really haven't been laying much recently anyway.

Neither have mine, i cant work out why.

There are loads of remedies for an egg eater but few of them actually work I'm afraid. You could try blowing an egg and filling it with chilli sauce before blocking the holes back up with candle wax and putting it back in the nest to see if it will put the offender off but it didn't work for me. I ended up using food colouring to dye the egg eater's beak so I could identify which one was doing it and cull her.

Would you be able to fit one of these https://www.chicken-house.co.uk/rollaway_nestboxes.htm in the nest box. If the egg rolls out of range once laid it might solve your problem.

Are all the eggs attacked or just the odd one? One of our hens can lay soft or thin shelled eggs and they can get broken. Then they all eat it but don't attack the other eggs. To toughen up the shell we occasionally feed a little yoghurt, milk and small snails. Worth checking they are getting enough calcium, which they should do it the mainly eat layers rations.

We've had the same problem recently, due to the fact that one of our hens was laying an extremely thin shelled egg. Anyway, we haven't had any problems (touch wood) since blowing one of the eggs and filling it with Colmans English Mustard. Left it one morning in the nesting boxes and they didn't take too kindly to it.
