Ok, so we have already established we are quite interested in guns, my problem now is that I am looking for a Zeiss conquest 4.4 x 14/ 44 mildot matte with side focus -scope - I cant get one anywhere in england, have tried everywhere .
It looks like its available in the states( at a much better price), but what if it goes wrong, will it be covered under the warranty - will I have to send it back to the us?
any suggestions?

The first question should be "Is it legal to bring it in?" Shouldn't it? As for the warranty you'll probably be covered by the manufaturers warranty but you'd need to check that with the supplier

Since 911, It is very difficult to import anything to do with shooting without going through registered inporters / distributors.

I know that, but thats firearms , triggers, barrels etc(gun parts), its ok for optics, as far as I can work out. It wasnt that I was worried about, it was , buying from the states would save money, If I got the goods - dont want them keeping the money and not sending me the sites, plus would it be covered unde the manufacturers warranty, cos its quite expensive . Can you believe I cant get it in this country? plus its as many �'s over here as it is dollars in the usa - some conversion rate that( for dealers eh)

I had problems shipping an image intensifier nightsite. It was consficated by by US Customs and ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms). Ordinarily I don't think there would have been a problem, but 911 screwed that up. If you can get it, you will have to pay UK VAT as soon as it arrives at 17.5%..............unless you know a certain trick

Hmm, yes the vat!! that was another little issue, we are trying to work out the little 'trick', to our best advantage - you wouldn't like to pm me your thoughts on how to get over it would you , pllleeaasee !!, and i'll let you into our ideas.....(we always have some mad schemes cooking up here ) lol

The guarantee thing is going to depend on how stroppy the maker is. Do these things have serial numbers. In the late 70s there was a lot of 'grey import' camera gear, completely legally parallel imported. Some manufacturers wouldn't service/repair it unless you sent it back to Japan.

I know this is way out of date... but I was out in the US a year or so ago and brought back a scope and some mags for my Ruger 10/22..... then found that apparently there was no problem with the mags, but scopes are considered "Significate Military Equipment", or some such phrase, and therefore need an export licence!

Luckily, only the Airport security spotted the scope in my hand luggage, and were OK about it.... if it had been US Customs that had seen it I'd have probably lost it!

Warranties will only usually apply to the country where the product was purchased. There are some exeptions cars for instance where most manufactures have a pan euopean aggrement to do warranty work.

A lot of these companies are seperate entities in different countries. Fuji UK is not the same comapany as Fuji Japan and a japanese imported camera will not be covered with the same warranty as a UK one in this country ( although some manufacturers offer 'worldwide warraniy' this is very often a very basic cover and is no where near as comprehensive as a proper one) many manufacturers will do warranty work on items not supplied by them as a goodwill gesture, you should be aware that there is no oblogation.
