I was checking over our direct debits recently and realised with some horror that we're currently paying just over ï¿½40 per month in pet insurance for our 4 cats and 1 dog. Given that they're mainly on the young side (dog is barely out of puppyhood, 2 of the cats are around 18 months old and the other two are about 5-ish) I wondered whether anyone else thought that a) this was an awful lot of money to be paying; and/or b) thought we should/n't really bother; and/or c) had any other ideas.

Our pet insurance provider is Pet Plan who seem to be acknowledged to be about the best around. Our house and smallholding is insured with NFU Mutual, but they don't 'do' pets - only livestock.

Any thoughts or advice on this lovely sunny Friday?

Thought: Blimey, that's a lot of money.
Advice: for a good ROCI, make sure one of them gets injured.

Ive just had to have one of my dogs put down and we were offered pet insurance and this operation and god knows what. Why !? She was 12 years old, had three legs, had gone deaf and her eyesight was going.
We were all upset, but at the end of the day she was a dog and ï¿½40 a month would make a difference to some people i know.
Livestock insurance i can see being a given, but pets i am not so sure.

No. Pet insurance strikes me as an insane waste of money. It's worth making sure that your domestic insurance offers cover for third party damage caused by your pets though. IMHO.

I'm glad you all seem to be saying pretty much what I was thinking. We took the two older cats from a cat rescue centre and the pet insurance was part of the deal. But we were still living in the South East then so I suppose it was more 'the norm' to have pet insurance then.

We've acquired the other two cats and the dog since moving out here to West Wales to our smallholding and just added the 3 of them to the insurance without thinking. It wasn't until I started to review our monthly spending recently that I realised exactly how much we were now paying...and I agree that ï¿½40 per month makes a lot of difference to some people - including us. That's ï¿½480 per year fer gawds sake! Errrm, I think we'd really have to go it some to run up vets bills of that amount on the 5 of them in a year...and ï¿½480 buys an awful lot of lime mortar and sheep feed wouldn't you say?

I was thinking more about chocolate and alcohol, but whatever floats yer boat.

In the first year I had my pooch, he broke 3 bones in one foot, ripped a toenail out of another and skinned the pads on a third. He also enjoyed leaping at cars as a hobby. We have pet insurance!

I've got pet insurance as one of my cats was run over and had to have her hips pinned (10 years later she is a great hunter!)

My pets are on my 'contents' insurance though (that always makes me laugh for some warped reason) and it costs me a couple of quid a month.

I used to be with Pet Plan (and they are excellent at paying up if you need to claim) but for regular non-pedigree moggies I thought they charged way too much. i was paying for things I didn't need like replacement value and help with advertising if they went missing! Hardly necessary for two old farm cats.

With the contents insurance I get exactly what I need - around #1000 pay up for an operation. No bells and whistles...........

Oh thanks for that - I'll check ours again when I get home. Perhaps we could do a deal or summat. It's just that NFU Mutual insure all our smallholding, livestock etc, and I don't think they'll buy the idea of 4 moggies and a small Jack Russell being added.

I have been thinking about pet insurance recently as my dog is almost 9 years old and I'm concerned about him becoming il and then having to be put down if we can't afford treatment Another option we thought of was putting money away each money in savings to cover vets bills if they come up instead of paying out for insurance each month reguardless

When I had 16 dogs I found out I was paying ï¿½150 a month in insurance!! Instead Iput it away in a separate account for when it was needed as it usually wasn't!! Becky

I have two dogs and pet insurance. One of them had had two cruciate ligament operations on her back legs, both of which were paid for by the insurance. I've had my money's worth!
