If a move to France takes your fancy, have a look at the seminar offered by www.FrenchEntree.com.

The one day event on Saturday 13th November covers all aspects of starting a new life abroad, including setting up a business, getting into the system etc and I present a section on Downshifting.

Ticket details are available on site with a full list of speakers and topics covered.

Also, if you are interested in moving to France, French Entre is well worth a look through with a coffee and a sticky bun.

Bonne chance!

Sounds a good idea, hopefully first item on the course is:

1) You must learn french!

Too many Brits seem to think they can live abroad sensibly without the language skills.

No need to learn French, just speak slower and louder

Hi Jema,

You are dead right there!

A good handle on the language is the most important thing - do take a look at The Language Show post as well.

It irritates me beyond belief to find people who have been here 20 years and can't get past a "Bonjour"...

If you plan to live abroad, get cracking on the language as soon as possible and involve the whole family.

The interactive stuff on the www.BBC.co.uk website is really good, you can do it at your own pace and it's free!

I'll confess to doing 3 years of French at school and quite a few attempts to learn since But is has almost all gone in one ear and out the other.

I think I actually would need to be immersed in the language for it to really take.

I confess, I also found it far easier to learn it here, 'on my feet'.

Being plonked in with a good handful of essential phrases was brilliant for me. I prefered to talk to the locals and enjoyed the experience far more.

However, the downside of it has been my accent is very good.....which means once I kick off a conversation, my partner thinks I am fluent and rattles off at 100 mph...
