I have just read Rob R's article on the Kerry Hill, and am absolutely amazed at the amount of "red tape" involved in having wool returned to you after sending off your fleeces.
I have five ewes and a lamb ram, all chosen because of their coloured wool. I intend to breed from them next year, and may end up with a flock similar in size to Rob's.
Having read his article, however, I realise that the production of fleece into balls of wall is a complicated process, and have some questions.
1 - How do I contact the NFC?
2 - Do they keep half of the completed product?
3 - How do I contact the wool board?
4 - Why do you need permission to sell your own wool?
I am really confused , please help!
Thanks a lot,

The NFC have a website: https://www.thenaturalfibre.co.uk/ although the company has just changed hands & is in the process of getting moved to Cornwall & set up, so the contact details have changed & they aren't processing at the moment.
They don't keep any of the wool, the returned weight is have that which you send off because of the processing losses, which includes all the muck & natural oils removed from the fleece in order to spin it.
If you have four or more adult sheep in the UK you are obliged to register with the wool board, the forms for which may be obtained by clicking this link. Certain coloured breeds are exempt from the board whilst other breeds (the Kerry Hill included) requires special exemption. In our case they were happy to promote the small scale craft business initiative & therefore grant our exemption from the (compulsory) wool board marketing scheme.
The scheme was set up to give British wool producers the cooperative clout of a single marketing body. The cut off point set at four sheep is aimed to allow the small craft producer to keep sheep for their own purposes, but is in my view too low. Allowing the board to take your fleeces is a far easier & simpler option for most producers & having your own processed is by no means cheap, but it is ultimately satisfying |
