The updated guide - last edited 9/11/2011
This list currently only covers pigs (I may expand it later).

I have collated data for 50+ abattoirs from views on several forums, so it is by its nature subjective.

They won`t make them compulsary,

Not to offend Halal and Kosher Abattoirs,

Or the public would have a fit,if they saw how these Animals are killed.

I can add another review for Glaves at Brompton-

I used them as an alternative to Spenborough Abattoir for OTM cattle as they do retail butchery, rather than just wholesale available at Spenborough. Delivering the animals there wasn't a problem, neither was collecting the meat, which is well butchered. The only thing (other than being at least an hour away by road) is that they were very expensive. I paid twice as much as usual for basic packaging & crude (ie not retail-ready) labelling. Retail ready packaging was going to be extra. I couldn't afford to use them again and make a living as extra cost plus fuel eliminates any profit. I'd be better off just selling OTM cattle at market.

ETA - What a bloody mess, literally! Very inconsistent butchery and packaging; Steaks vary from one to two inches thick, my 1lb bags of mince start at 604g and go up to 984g The bags are tied but are rather randomly stacked in the boxes so that about half are leaking blood throughout the box. The offal is diced, which is a good thing, but who gets through 750g of liver in one sitting?

Maybe it is just my attention to detail but I would be ashamed at sending product out in this state and charging so much for the service. It would be fine if it was much cheaper or vac-packed at the same price.

The food standards agency has a list of 'approved abattoirs', split in to various livestock categories and saying what services they offer. It's updated regularly and I assume it's a definitive list of who is legal.

Ensors Gloucester now not cutting for private use. Happy to kill, and cut into primary chunks, but that's all. And stopping lambs and pigs. Have been bought by some faceless corp.

Indeed. You can't underestimate the importance of buying produce from people who use abattoirs like this; every village used to have one.

Not sure what you meant by "And stopping lambs and pigs"

Will they still kill pigs and take into legs, shoulders, belly and back, or won't they even go that far?

No, they're going to only kill cattle. And, they'll only part butcher them for us private people.

Used Griffiths in Lentwardine this morning.

Bad bit, you have to reverse your trailer into a tiny yard off the main road, but people were patient and helpful.

Everything else was fine. I figure when all the employees are smiling and happy, things are likely to be better.

They're butchering too, so we will see how that turns out. They can only handle one home kill cow at a time (small butchery) but that's usually enough. Happy to deal with OTM cattle, too.

If the bull is about 100kg, they reckon kill and butcher will be around �220.

We used to use Griffiths'. Smashing people: very friendly and helpful and I never saw any sign of impatience with the stock.

ETA Did you have a pie from the shop?

I'm reckoning on 100-150 kg deadweight. He's only a Dexter.

There wasn't a lot of him, but I need him, and two others gone, and the freezer is empty.

I bought 4 pork pies, a steak and onion pie for dinner tonight, and two sausage rolls for breakfast.

A bit better than Greggs.
