Just got round to posting this from last Monday. A great trip out from Southsea on 'Moonshine' skippered by Pete, (highly recommended).

It was my first boat trip for a couple of years and the guy who runs these trips treats the fish with some respect, kills only what he needs, and encourages everyone to do the same. I was hoping for some Bass for the freezer, plenty of mackerel and the possibility of turbot. Some of the photos are below, fabulous Bass at 8lb 4oz a personal best by a country mile!

The brill was perfect size for 2 and was one of the best pieces of fish I have ever eaten. I got seven good portions out of the Bass but only managed half a dozen mackerel, they just weren't interested all day. I also managed a couple of rays that were a bit on the small size so they went back for another day, a good day out, a fascinating insight into the world of the charter skipper and some of the tastiest fish in the sea (well in the freezer now).

Off to North Cornwall this weekend so might be able to hook a few more Mackerel for the pot.

Lovely pics, glad you had a great day. Took my little boat out yesterday, sea was rougher than expected so i headed back in after catching three mackerel. They're still around anyway.

Cor mate ! Some fantastic fish there. Those bass in particular, are clonkers.

I had a whole grilled brill in Lyme Regis a few years ago and it was delicious, fair old size too and just about fitted on the plate!

Sorry to bring up an old post but I'm new here and having a look around. The pictures are great, I'd love to go sea fishing. How much does it cost to go out on the boat? Is tackle hire included? It looks like a great day out!

Hi Hammer Man, The trip I went on cost about �60.00 for the day including bait and the skipper did have tackle if it was needed. It's a good idea to have a look at some of the sea fishing forums to get recommendations of boats in your area. I would always go for a full day because it means proportionally greater fishing time to travel time. Half day trips are around in the summer though. M.

Hi SmattyB, Thanks for the reply. I'm amazed at how cheap the day fishing was! I always thought it would cost 1 or 2 hundred pounds! I've always wanted to own my own boat and if I can learn about fishing then it will make getting a boat more worth it I think. It looks great fun! goes off in search of a sea fishing forum

Hi again, Sorry, I should clarify that that was �60.00 per person. The boat was about �240.00 for the day and we split it 4 ways. I still think it was good value (not all trips are as successful though!). Good luck. M.

Ahh, now that sounds more like I was expecting. As you say though thats still a good price, especially if the cost is shared between a few of you. I'm just looking at a sea fishing forum now, there are some great pictures dotted about on it!
