4-6 Hot Cross buns.
500ml Double cream
200ml full fat milk. Obviously you can use semi skimmed, or almond, or something if you don't love life, or are a vegetablist.
125g caster sugar
2 egg yolks
3 eggs.
Vanilla pod. Or essence. Or don't bother.

Slice and butter your buns.
Layer them in a flat & wide dish.

Pop milk and cream in a pan. Add vanilla (split your pod). Bring almost to the boil. Turn off the heat. Remove your pod.
Eggs, yolks & sugar in a bowl. Whisk until mixed smoothly. Pour on the hot milky cream. Keep whisking. You don't want it to cook the eggs yet.

Pour your hot, creamy liquid over the buttered buns. Squish them down in it a bit. They will soak it up slowly. You want some crusty bits poking thru. Let it stand for some time, at least half an hour.

Hot oven for about 30-40 minutes.

Not one phrase in this recipe is a euphemism.

once travel is ok again i will have to try that at a home alone time, i would be beaten for contemplating making a delicious bread based pud.

McVities ginger cake makes a good version too. Helps if you've got a bit of extra stem ginger in syrup to add to it.

I can see that. It makes an excellent base for a Christmas pudding ice cream. And the flavours are shared.

I assume Jesus liked nutmeg, ginger and eggs.

the roman world had black pepper and other maritime/silk road products , nutmeg is plausible but i have not heard of any archaeological evidence for it

spiced otter nipples anyone?

if they had betal and cardamom chances are they had nutmeg but no digger has found a lost one so far as i know.
they probably all went into the bread puds, which was a roman thing

others might know more re nutmeg in antiquity but if the chap got frankincense and myrrh he probably had nutmeg in his bread pud at some point in Tiberian Judaea(or perhaps later)
