I'm digging a trench To plant a hedge.

I've a ton of very old, rotted horse manure. Can I line the bottom of the trench with it?

making a path for roots ,making soil rather than clay ,adding nutrients and water retention all are good for hedges

You would be better incorporating it with the soil IMHO, but either is better than none.

a hedge likes a good start ,as it matures it should be able to feed itself with bird droppings and random dead sheep

You're right of course, I just had visions of thin twisted branches reaching out to ensnare the unwary rambler...
