Not that I'm going to eat it. My mushroom identifying confidence is not that good but I'm just trying to see if I can get my idents right. I'm thinking it's The Prince. It's growing at the base of one of our conifers. Now I've give it a rub but I don't get an almondy smell. Would you only get that whilst cooking it? Thanks.

That looks like a prince to me but its hard to be absolute from a picture. Nice find.

It could also be a very young Dryads saddle,which is a bracket fungus. Really cant tell until I can see the underside. Has it got gills?

I'm not sure. I'd have to pull it up and have a look. I may do it once it looks like it's dying.

I would like to but don't have the confidence to try it. I could end up dead. Just testing out my skill and my book to see if I may be right.

But if you pick it now and it is a Prince you can eat it, if it's harmful it's just one prematurely dead fungus.....

pick it tonight ,cut the bottom of the stem ,if it doesn't yellow or smell of ink ,you've eliminated ,Agaricus placomyces[wood yellow stainer].If you now make an incision and it smells nicely somewhat of aniseed [its the prince,Aga. augustus]

Ok here are some ore pictures. I think when I cut in to it I got a slight smell of aniseed.

It does look like a Parasol from the top but they have white gills. So definitely a Prince. Aren't they supposed to smell of almonds,I think its the Horse mushroom that smells of aniseed.

Aye, it looks like a Prince, but it's def almonds that they're supposed to smell of, not aniseed. The only ones I've ever found have smelt quite strongly of almonds.

(Actually, the first thing I thought of when I smelt one was Mr Kiplings Bakewell Slices.....

I looked this up some more, turns out they can smell of anise after all, as well as almonds. In fact one ID even had "the almondy smell of anise" (which sounds like a bit of a stretch....doesn't it?).
