At last, I have a freezer full of chicken, as opposed to a field full of chickens. All the available birds went on Sunday, and came back today. I’m quite pleased with them,
9 Ross cobs (10 weeks, 1.2 - 1.7kg)
1 Light Sussex (25 weeks, 1.2kg)
2 Silver Dorkings (33 weeks, 1.4 and 1.8kg)
a couple of Croads (1.2kg)
and a fabulous Poulet de Bresse cockerel (33 weeks and 1.9kg). He was the same age and weight as one of the Dorkings, but a much better breast. I’m definitely hoping to breed some more next year. Oh, and one Aylesbury Duck (10 week’s old and 2.4kg).
All fed on supermixed corn and free range. Except the Ross' because they just spread corn around all over their run, so they they got mostly growers pellets. The big Poulet de Bresse and one of Dorkings were confined for their last month or so, because they were getting ideas above their station. The Ross' were nicer birds that I was expecting, and were very happy to go off foraging and showed no signs of going off their legs. They did eat a lot, but no more than the ducks, which grew at much the same rate. I will roast one of the smaller ones tomorrow. I do have a pic, if anyone could upload it?
