What is that weed called that looks a bit like clover and has little white bulbs when you dig it up? And how to eradicate it? And how do snails "do it" - and do they lay eggs?

Do you mean Oxalis? If so I have no idea.

Snails do lay eggs, some about the size of a very small pea. You often find clumps of 50 or so about this time of year, I feed them to my chickens.

I hope it's not celandine - which has little bulbs on it. Not too clover like, so I'll keep my fingers crossed as it is very difficult to eradicate. Forgot to say - for small areas it's probably best to did it clean out of the ground and stick it on the bonfire - for large areas - why not read that thread on new overgrown allotment!

Sounds like oxalis to me too - usually bronze/green leaves, yellow flower, and long green seed pods that explode if touched.

Pull it up - it's quite hard to get rid of because it's got underground runners, but it's easy to pull up, and provided you do it on a regular basis, it won't last more than a couple of years. If you do have any that have seed pods on, slip a plastic bag over the plant, hold it round that neck and then pull; that'll keep all the seeds inside.

Thanks. It's definitely not celandine - the leaves aren't so glossy. I haven't seen any flowers or pods at all, but that might be because I keep pulling it out. I don't have chickens to feed with snails eggs, but I suppose the birds might like them - when the neighbours cats aren't around. Are the eggs little pearly things about the size of a match head? Has anyone ever seen a snail "doing it"?

Yes & yes, sometimes you find two snails together and the chickens pull them apart.
