Last autumn I left the sunflowers in situ for the birdies to get the seeds, I've just been to cut the stems down and they are so strong I'll be able to use them for my runner beans!

Nettie, I've tried that with mixed success. They seem strong enough to begin with, but they spoil quite quickly if Spring and Summer turn wet. I'd reccomend using the thick ones, but keep a close eye on them.
