Vaseline all over the legs from toe to feathers once a week for three or four weeks.

You can dip the leg in surgical spirit as well, but I think it stings. The vaseline works just as well.

is benzyl benzoate the chemical spray? I've just heard that that is used on humans (crabs) and horses ( sweet/sweat itch ?) too and is in sudocrem

I'm not sure. The vaseline - or anything like that that you smear on, suffocates the mites. Active ingredients help a bit I think, but I do think, from observation, that they sting the bird, because the mites have burrowed in to the flesh under the scales. Sudocrem would work simply because it's thick, like vaseline; any active ingredient to kill the mites that didn't harm the bird would be a bonus.

Traditionally I think you used creosote or turps, which I suppose kills them.

The scales stay raised until the bird next moults and can look pretty grim - you aren't supposed to pick them off or anything, as it is painful for them.

He used to use WD40 on the budgies he breeds

Apparently it worked as they haven't had it for years.

How do birds get scaly leg?

I don’t know where the mites come from.
