I've just found a tick on my cat: how do I get rid of it? I know I can't just pull it off: what do I do? Oh, yuck.

It'll have to wait until I get back form town this afternoon, then. And the thought of the dear old girl covered in Vaseline...

Cheers for that, though.

I had this idea that the thing to do was to use alcohol...

Having checked the net, it seems that vaseline or alcohol would be a mistake.

Seems the thing to do is to pull it out by the *head* and *NOT* the body. And then disinfect the would.

This is typical:

They call my alcohol idea and res's vaseline "old wives tales" - I doubt either of us would be too pleased at that...

It doesn't tell you how to stop the cat from ripping youre arm off whilst you assult it with tweezers though.

Its possible to buy from the vet a small tool made for getting ticks out easily. Its not expensive, you hook it on the tick and twist and it simply lifts off.

Relatively easy if its on the head/ear. Bundle the cat in a blanket with just the head out.

But the general point is that its a two person job!

Pat it looks like we may disagree on this, but both Jan's ref and my link specifically caution *against* twisting the tick...

Well I took my cat to the vet with a tick on him and the vet showed me how to fix the tool on the tick and gently turn it and the tick came straight off. This is how the vets do it -I would't do it with tweezers but obviously this tool must have been designed specifically to remove ticks.

we got a handy little appliance from the pet shop or was it the vet anyway all you do is hook it round the tick and pull all the tick in one go and it was only cheap

I have to say that I have seen a vet do the very same thing.

I have only had to remove ticks twice ever, once from a dog and once from a hedgehog. They are really disgusting up close and personal!

The gadget I use is very similar to the little gadget you can buy specifically made for this purpose - er, mine came from a manicure kit. (Obviously I was stuck at the time and used my own judgement - certainly not making a personal recommendation to use anything other than the *proper* tool)

Or go to the vet's and get some 'Frontline', kills the tick and any others which try to attach within a month.
