Apart form the fact these are incredibly expensive, what is the opinion on these here?

Sorry if this has already been done to death

Hasn't been discussed very much...I think most people here would prefer the option of building or converting their own. The Eglu is not very flexible which is a major downfall if you think you might expand your flock...I don't like them, personally - the reasons are probably discussed here.

Are you looking in to housing options or is it just something you came across?

I must say that building our ark (pics on Treacodactyl's articles) probably came in at about as much as an Eglu - but I think it looks better and we can reuse/recycle it when we're done.

A second "travel" ark was a simpler and I think better design - this was a cube shape rather than triangular.

Next time (there will be a next time) we are considering a shed conversion which sounds like it will work out cheaper and be even more convenient for cleaning etc.

Wasn't Treaco saying something about how wonderful and great he thinks the Egglu and 'one stop poultry farming shopping' is?

No , I don't want one. In my plans I am going to convert a shed. But we are not quite there yet. I'll let you know when we are

I was just, loads of people I know keep chickens - a few have really surprised me. I am just wondering if this kind of thing is going to take off. I think it's great to encourage people do keep chickens but not for the sake of...

Anything that might encourage people to think about what they eat is a good thing in my book.
They are a bit pricey but they are ideal for people who are complete novices or only have space for one or two chooks in their gardens. And...lots of people start with an eglu and end up with a shed and a broody coop and an incubator and a vegetable patch.....

I got all the info on them posted to me just because they looked so -not chicken and I was curious! more like a cat box.
They seem to have done their research.
I would prefer to have a 'proper' chicken house but couldn't in my small garden - just no room. But an eglu would fit because its so portable.

I think they're ok and if I had to have chickens in my size garden I would get one of these...

Firstly I should point out I've not physically seen or used an eglu. I don't like the idea of them being made of plastic. In general I don't like 'style' products if the style takes priority over anything (for example colour coded car bumpers are simply stupid!). When I last looked at Eglu's web site they had misleading and as far as I know information that breaks the law in relation to disposing of dead hens.

Generally before buying a hen house of any type from anyone I would look at the following:

I think you really need a minimum of three hens.
Does the house have enough room for your chosen birds, hens do like to spend time in the house especially in bad weather
Is the house constructed well and is it secure, both from foxes and from high winds etc.
Is the house draft free but well ventilated?
Can you repair it easily if something breaks, especially important if you don't have somewhere else to keep the hens.

Finally, you can make your own house and it shouldn't cost that much.
