|
I know they're often imported, BUT they're very small, and they're divine, and they're not always THAT expensive.
Besides, the best ones I've seen came from Italy, they're not air freighted, and the amount of weight you buy isn't so very great, and I grow nearly all of my own veg so...
Right. Guilt out of the way.
I noticed truffles on Cambridge market at lunchtime. Turned out to be two species, the black truffle (they weren't so good, they were imported from China, and you could tell that they werent' fresh, the smell wasn't pungent, they were in all ways 'dead'), and summer truffles (imported form Italy, fresher, a bit of 'give' in them, theoretically not normally as good as the black truffle but so much better than the others there).
I bought two, paid four quid, and we'll be devouring one with pasta for dinner (along with giand puffball), and the other with scrambled eggs at the weekend.
If you can get them, it seems to be now until sometime near Christmas that you see them most cheaply in the shops. |

That's a pretty sophisticated market stall there Cab |
The lass who runs it almost treats it as a hobby. They have, very often, four or five sorts of wild mushrooms, some good, some bizarre (had fairy ring marasmius there a while back!), as well as all sorts of wierd and wonderful fruit and veg. Sometimes it's great local produce, other times not. The other market stalls vary from the very good, local, 'normal' produce through to the pretty standard fruit and veg.
All in all, it is an excellent market. |
