Interesting. He does like coloured flesh apples doesn't he. Most of the ones I see are white fleshed, but the farm shop I use gets varieties that run through the season, unlike the standard 'supermarket' apple which tend to be the keepers. We start the season in about August with the early apples, of which there are two or three before we get to the main season. They also do russets, Egremont I think, but not sure, and they are still in season. They are the only ones I really like, but currently they have Spartan, Braeburn and Coxes, as well as the russets, all fairly local as far as I know, as we have two very large orchards within about 15 miles of us.

nice that less well known varieties are being promoted.

the booklet seems an odd choice for a limited edition print run, i imagined a library/posh coffee table type hardback, wet chemistry archive quality plates, etched text, good binding etc etc and at least a couple of 0's on the price tag.

imho modern auderbon's birdies for the monetisation of a limited edition photo/print book (singles for framing as well ) and a self print pamphlet for a nominal fee/free for publicity might be a better earner.

dpack, if someone is self-publishing it is up front costly to do what they actually did do. Some go for a print on demand - costs more for the individual book but the author / photographer only puts out money as each book is produced.

The follow up choices are A) perhaps a publisher will find it saleable and look to acquire rights to publish a posh edition OR B) the photographer could try a GoFundMe

A friend is working on a self-published book on local churches. He has so far tried three or four options and is unhappy will all of them as far as quality, etc.

I've helped fund a couple of books through this lot. Don't know about the economics from the author's end but you get a proper book out of it.

That looks good Slim. Some of those apples are familiar in the UK. We have a variety of 'Sunset' in our garden that we bought here over 30 years ago, and Blenheim Orange and one of the russets are also well known here.

Our local country park did a survey of the crab apples in the park and several new to science were found. One of them was named after one of the retired Park Rangers and a grafted tree given to him in a special ceremony. Our son was particularly pleased as the man had been his mentor when he worked there.
