Not a personal questions I hasten to add (although they were doing averages on the radio this morning, and apparently the average person has sex at 10.30pm ) I digress.... We have something making a hell of a racket in the woods accross from us, sounds suspiciously like a deer in rut, but that's a bit early is't it?

Don't think so - is it the males calling in a booming yet scary/fey kind of a way? That's due to start about now round here.

Up in Aberdeenshire, Scottish red deer rut starts about 3rd week September But E. European bloodlines of red deer come into season earlier and calve earlier, so presumably rut earlier too.

A couple of our ewes are starting to sniff at the fence at Rambo our ram and present their bottoms to him in a "Come and get me big boy" type way...not that it's relevant of course. Just thought I'd mention it.

The large deer park around here advertises for people to go and watch the deer in rut. It seems rather voyeuristic to me, but they seem to view it as a perfectly normal way to spend an autumn afternoon and evening. But then it is a National Trust property. They probably strip off at the drop of a checked picnic blanket, allegedly for charity, too.
