I've got my mits on a clean Win 98SE PC and installing OpenOffice and a few other apps.

OpenOffice will not auto extract, probably because there's no unzip software on the PC. WinZip is not free, is there any good free unzipping software out there?

There's one called 7-zip mentioned in jema's 'best free software' post, but it doesn't have a link, so you'll have to google it.
Best Free Software Suite Updated
The Open CD site offers for free a wonderful collection of just about every application software product you need to run a PC. Many of these substitute admirably for expensive commercial products. There is Abi Word as an alternative for MS Word, OpenOffice for MS Office XP, ThunderBird for Outlook, The Gimp for Adobe Photoshop, 7-zip for WinZIP are many more. If you then add to this collection some of the other utilities from my "46 Best-ever Utilities" collection you will have all the software you'll ever need without spending a cent. Note: All of the Open CD utilities can be downloaded for free as a CD ISO image. If you have a slow connection you can purchase the CD for a very modest cost.

Thanks All. The Open Office site states you don't need an extracter, well I did! I used 7-zip and the site is: https://www.7-zip.org/

It worked. I'm trying to only use freeware if possible and not use anything that, in theory, you need to pay for!

Shall I add to the sticky?

Yep, that would be good.
I wonder whether someone who uses a Mac would do a free softwareguide too, then I won't have to bother looking for it/them.
If I ever get the bloody thing, of course.

Some, like OpenOffice, have downloads for various OSs, Mac, Win, Linux etc.

I'll worry about it when I've had a play with all the stuff that comes with it, which I reckon should do just about everything I want anyway.
I've already noticed I can get Firefox if I decide I don't like the bundled browser.
