OK, now what [vehicle] would you choose in my situation- low budget (as ever!), mainly to be used for 'clean' jobs (transporting food products), some towing & offroad capability, and long distance journeys now & again. Needs to be hardtop, preferably commercial, good on fuel, and something that gives a good impression (ie glass in windows, starts on ignition, door doesn't drop a couple of inches when opened, door closes again )

We've got a little Ford Fiasco for 'best'; for trips farther afield than an hour and for transporting M-J's clients up and down to courts and stuff. It's basic but it does the job, and leaves the Land Rover for the mucky stuff.

And for the school run, I'm afraid Yes, I am that dread cliche - the parent with the 4x4 on the school run!
With the Ifor Williams pig-pen on the back I ferry four kids around, with the hardier ones sitting on the feed sacks and silage in the pig-pen, and the wee ones in the cab with me. It probably counts as child abuse, but they love it, and all their friends think it's cool (Cool? It's chuffing freezing sometimes, but they seem to be immune to the cold).

Yes, yes and yes. If Top Gear can't kill a Hi Lux..........

True (still wouldn't have one though), but when they did the "What can cross this muddy field" test it was only the 1950's Mk II that managed it, and then it dragged all the others out from where they got stuck!

One word mate.......tyres!!!!!

When I owned a IIA on 205's it would often be pulled from ruts by my mate in a sj410 with serious boots.

Very true. I wish I could afford a decent set of B.F.Goodrich or similar for the truck, as the Michelins it's currently wearing tend to spin a bit when it's seriously muddy, and I've now got a sodding great pair of ruts alongside the hedge where I was fencing the week before last in the widdling rain. Grr!

I had winter duellers on the surf, M&S tyres, great off road but 'interesting' on. Got the standard duellers now which were reasonably prived.

And how much off-road capability do you need?

Well, we have a Defender hicap for serious towing & load carry capacity, hard to put into words how much but lets say whatever it is it needs to be able to cross a ploughed field.

Really, apart from pickup buties mentioned above, it needs to be everything from a meat carrying bus to family car (minus the family ).
