Which method of taking rabbits would you prefer?

Having always been a rifle shooter, I find the shotgun lacks the legs to do the job, and is so noisy that it alerts everyone from miles around to your presence. It also clears several fields around you of rabbits, whilst a smallbore rimfire properly sound moderated is as quiet as snapping your fingers. Not literally!

I've chosen shooting with a firearm. If I had access to the land and a firearm that would be the way I'd do it. I can choose the rabbit to take, shoot from a reasonable distance and be as certain as I can that the rabbit will die quickly.

I also don't mind admitting that I would find it easier to shoot a rabbit than to catch one live and kill it by hand.

I wouldn't mind trying any of the options under the right conditions and with someone I trusted and knew what they were doing.

Ferrets, because:
I like them.
You can use them pretty much anywhere.
No broken bones, pellets etc. to mess up your cooking.

If it is purely pest control then lamp and rifle. But shooting them with a shotgun over a spaniel takes some beating.

Wot about shooting over ferrets? That can be good sport - earth up the warren apart from a few pop holes downwind , introduce the ferret on the windward side and wait for the flush while you stand on top at the ready.

Falconry sounds good to me, how are they killed in falconry?

By a bird with big talons hitting them at high speed, in my limited experience.

Is it the shock or do they asphyxiate them, or what?

Break their back usually I think. I've only been a couple of times. The rabbit's usually dead by the time you get to it, and you can always stretch its neck to make sure.

I went with a guy who was using three Harris hawks. They work together to flush the rabbits out. We got an accidental out of season pheasant as well.

Shooting over ferrets did occur to me, but it's really using a shotgun in the sense that using a spaniel doesn't come under hunting with dogs.

I didn't include falconry because it tends to be a very specialist sport with a limited following (I'd love to try it though as I love raptors).
