i would have though it was plain dangerous, woods where people go walking are not places to shoot anything. I would ask the forestry commision what was going on!

Rubbish.....everyone has a right and a RESPONSIBILITY when in the countryside.
Moreover most deer are shot at times when Joe Public and his OH are tucked up and snoring.Shots are taken by people who know what constitutes a safe shot and are taken with expanding ammo which means there is virtually no chance of a ricochet or over penetration.

No your talking rubbish, go stand in a wood and see how far you have a clear view, work out how far and how fast a bullet travels. these people were walking in the wood when they came across the animal being butchered, how long before that was it shot, 5 minutes, 10 minutes who knows? was it dragged near the path to be butchered or dealt with where it dropped. Chance could easy be that they could have been a lot closer and the facts show that they were walking when shooting had taken place otherwise they wouldnt have seen anything.
I will pass you views over to someone i know who shoots, i will also post up the reply from the commision.

What time did it occur Bingo? Was it on one of your early morning hunts?

Andy B - As I have tried to make it clear, shots are taken with backstop and bullet type taken into account.I`ll post some pics which show what I mean.

And finally is this shot safe ?

Yes but only if the stalker gets low so that the branch is out of the way of the bullet path.

Interesting. Bingo & I found these two about ten yards from a large track in the woods (where they had their FC pickup parked). When we were wandering past the spot about an hour (?) later they were gone, so we looked at the spot where the deer was hung from the tree. Only a few signs of the kill, & that was because we were looking for it. I don't recall hearing a shot while we were there, but I guesss it can't have been long before we arrived. Other walkers & horse riders around too.

i have seen platform hides 20ft high used in woodland to give safe shooting where a ground based firing position would not ,basically drill it from above with the ground as backstop .handy at waterholes etc acording to the chap i knew deer wardening in surrey in open access land .

So we can resonably assume it wasn`t shot there,as there would be the gralloch or signs of digging.
If it was shot recently there would have been a considerable blood trail and even if it were well bled the pluck has to go with the carcase and even if it were for home consumption,I don`t know anyone who removes the pluck when gralloching.

If I had been there I would have asked a few questions.........but there again I always ask permission when collecting anything from someone elses land.
