What investment? You can set up a website for next to nothing nowadays. Benefit? If you work at your web presence then yes, if you just set up a site and leave it then no.

I reckon one of the website peeps here might knock you something decent up for a few hundred quid. Depends what you want from it.

What tahir says. We have had a grand total of two people contact us simply because they came across our website over the last two years.

However, people that we market to in different ways - leaflet drops, meeting them on other jobs and giving them a card, etc., do look at the website and then come back to us. I look on it as a portfolio of more info about us that people can explore once they've heard of us, rather than a first-stop marketing thingy (solution? but sounds really up itself).

It's definitely worth making sure that your site keywords are correct so that you show up in google searches. And I pay a bit every month to google and yahoo so that we come up in the 'paid searches' bit every so often. It's about raising your profile rather than simply generating customers.

I sell more at craft fairs in one go but the website ticks over quite nicely through the year.

As a consumer I'm more likely to buy from somewhere/book a stay/ visit a restaurant etc if it has a website.

I know mine isn't as professional as it could be but it does the trick until I can afford to pay someone to do a better one. I took a free course at the local Adult Ed and it gave me the basics to be able to do that. Hosting costs me about 100 a year and the domains were about 30 for two (co.uk & com) for two years.
Depends what you want to sell I guess.

I just want a couple of pages, showing the pigs, meat, and pedigree stock for sale, what we do and why we do it. Then contact numbers to order over phone. Want plenty of pig pictures though. Anyone now how much it will cost roughly??

Or alternatively do it yourself - Use something like Joomla,Wordpress or Drupal - they are frameworks that give you alot of the functionality you need without you having to write it yourself and come with lots of great add-ons that expand the site and if you need a domain name and space get Jema to sell them - very reasonable very reliable

Then if setting up the site is too scary - pay him or someone else to set it up for you - I can do it or there are plenty of others around that can as well - Sally has a very good looking site, Fee writes websites etc - once the basic site is set up you will be able to add things as and when you want without having to know very much about writing webpages yourself

Something that simple really is worth doing yourself.

Agree - use Flickr to host the piggy pictures and use their free code to get them displayed on your site

That would be really easy to do with Wordpress - I've got a couple of sites running Wordpress and it really is very powerful if you self host

Joomla is probably overkill at this moment in time for you

I'm happy to have a go setting something up for you
