There are loads of Mallards on my local canal. Does anyone know if it's legal for me to take some for the pot?

No idea but how would you catch one? Wild ducks can only be killed during the season which is Sept 1 - Jan 31 for inland water in England.

........and you need to be the land owner or authorised person. The ducks have to be Mallard/Teal/wigeon....ie those that can be shot and you need to be more specific than "TAKE".....So that`ll be a big NO then.

Definitely a no. Your local canal is a public place. Using any sort of gun there is very likely to lead to the arrival of an armed response unit and an appearence in court. Attempting to catch and kill the ducks by any other means is also likely provoke a similar response, except by unarmed police and/or the RSPCA.

my big dog and his even bigger dad jumped a duck on the river from a sitting start on a warm day at holmfirth folk festival ,got it and brought it back

So, to clarify, you can't grap a duck by a canal, wrestle it to the ground, wring its neck and take it home for the pot. I presume the same goes for Canada geese? What about pigeons then?

Of course if thats the Lancaster canal that I used to forage on you've got all sorts of other options other than the ducks

Have you any idea whether the freshwater mussels in there are safe? I used to eat them occasionally, but I'd stop well short of suggesting that anyone else does likewise! Loads of tasty wild greens up around there too. And if you follow the canal down to Galgate, then take the branch that goes down to Glasson and Chonder Green, you've got a vast amount of good forage down there.

All you need is a Daffy Duck costume and a rubber mallet Its an old poaching method passed down from generation to generation ! The old skills are simply dying out .
