Are you looking at costs of equipment too? Anything you need and might have to have repaired or replace in time. It's something you need to consider if you couldn't work without something - maybe Sally's sock knitting machine?

Not sure if needles count, though

Yes, equipment came as part of the 'big sum' i.e how much of something do I need to seell per anum to make x amount.

You're way ahead of me - just trying to remember what we did and chuck it in, so to speak

Actually I'm not too sure that thinking way ahead is particularly helpful. It's one thing being aware of what you'll need but doing these 'sums' is making me want to run a a mile and go flip burgers. Maybe I should just shut up and make tea cosies

Hardest part I found was remembering what is you actually do after all the finance, bank, sales and marketing stuff. So don't forget the tea cosies, for goodness sake!

Ok - I've just worked out what I would need to sell to provide half the family income per annum at 8 an hour and with a 30% margin.

2756 soap kits
or
312 tea cosies
or
1568 mug cosies
or
5044 felted soaps

X 10 with a 100% margin

Burger anyone?

Sorry, not with you. Do you mean that you'd need to sell 312 tea cosies to make money?

Half of what it costs us to live is here is 15,000 - that's what I'd have to sell (with the hourly rate and margin) to make 15,000 in a year after costs etc.

How long does it take to make a tea cosy? (i.e. is it feasible to make 312 p.a.)

It would take me about 24 hrs a week for 52 weeks. I find it hard working stuff out because of having more than one product. I guess when I've been doing it a bit longer I'll see what sells most.

I think it's doable but only if I get the right market I s'pose. At the moment I'm doing 5 shows this year and I can't see me selling 62 tea cosies at each (or 500 odd kits or 313 mug cosies) I'm going to spend the subsidy I get for going to the marketing course on...errr...marketing I'm going to be brave and write press releases and try to get featured in mags like Country Living. It's bloody hard work this self employment malarkey

Stace, this must take less time to make than a tea cosy mustn't it?
