Please press ESC if moving images cause a problem

Hello everyone. I received a Message about my avatar today which although pretty low key, and with subtle humour dares to move a little. It is neither brash, distracting or offensive....and has been up for several months. in fact it is less distracting being on the left than the several animated smilies quite often used multiply (particularly and ). So I searched and found this thread.

I am obviously sympathetic to Marigold and any other forumers with health issues rather than aesthetic preferences and believe me I have all moving advertising completely blocked on my computers at all times.

It takes less than a minute to do any of the following:

1. Pressing the ESC key on your keyboard will stop a moving gif in its tracks as a one off for that pageload.

2. Right clicking over the image after installing AdBlock Plus (a really useful free add-on) allows bespoke permanent blocking for a particular image in about five seconds...it is the top choice on the list, the second default blocks all avatars.

3. In Firefox there are several simple options from block after first view to permanent blocking of all animated gifs. Here's a link:
https://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_:_Tips_:_Animated_Images

I vote for live and let live...unless the content of any avatar is offensive moving or otherwise.

Given your avatar I find that hard to believe.

Marigold, did you actually read the bold line at the top of my post....the one which gave you an extremely quick fix? Press ESC....it will freeze an animated gif and all smilies on that page instantly.

Then you can read my post which gives permanent fixes to get rid of gifs which cause you problems either individually, collectively, or all avatars of all types. You could get a friend or relative to set it up for you and it would work on all forums giving you a greater freedom to dip into other online environments.

Then everyone has the choice.

gekkko,

Did you actually read the thread before posting? If so you would have noticed that I mentioned the "press esc" option on page 5 and that a debate (of sorts) took place before a decision was made to request members not to use moving avatars. This was abided by as even by people who considered it to be totally unreasonable, an unfair vote etc etc. If you want the policy to be reviewed, then IMO you should make a polite request rather than arrogantly stating that anyone who doesn't like it must press esc or modify their browser so that you can do as you please.

You responded to a polite private request with a public declaration that you don't intend to honour the policy AND your avatar indicates that you don't give a damn (presumably about anything that doesn't suit you), hence my comment. I don't know who asked you to change your avatar, but I find your response to their request offensive given the history of this issue. But I don't suppose you give a damn about that.

I apologise for being too busy promoting community resilience, working with sustainable and affordable housing design for developing countries wrecked by our own decadence and doing my bit to produce healthy local bees that can thrive whilst we do as we wish...

...so a 9 page thread stretching back to 2007 is a bit much to expect someone to read don't you think? Actually no you don't because you feel that valid alternatives that allow everyone to enjoy a forum are "not fair" because you prefer to argue and control.

Arrogant...look it up. Helpful...look that up too. And "I don't give a damn" is kitten-speak in our modern world and is traditionally said in a happy, jokey manner. And you know perfectly well that you can block that supposedly "offensive" avatar permanently in seconds.

Being helpful is what I do best. Why not just do that and get on with contributing to the many interesting threads on this great resource ?

And for info I was not asked to remove the avatar, merely warned that there had been unpleasant private mails on that subject.

I apologise for misinterpreting the tone of your first post.

For the record I have never sent anyone an unpleasant PM on this or any other subject.

A vote was made, gekko, and it is, therefore, forum policy. Why bring it all up again?

That's ok. I apologise if you took that as an implication.

If it were forum policy I would have fairly expected it to be written on the FAQ/Site policy/Images policy....but it is not as far as I can see. DS is a huge forum and something brought up several years ago and subject to a minority vote and then buried in tens of thousands of forum posts is hardly a fair call, is it? The vote on here was 24:10, technology has moved on and blocking is very simple and accessible, and I knew nothing about any of it until yesterday in spite of posting on the same thread as you and several mods on many occasions over several months using this avatar.

Why is it that the few who inadvertently cross an unspoken/invisible line are then likely branded "troublemakers" when trying to help? The future of our very planet lies in people seeking and finding simple solutions to problems. And offering help freely. Many attitudes must change.

And Chez do you not think that having rows of flashing rotating smilies in the middle of a reply are an issue too? I do...they aggravate my eye strain issues caused by working too hard.

You obviously aren't going to change your opinion - so what I think, or anyone else thinks doesn't actually matter, does it? You'd clearly rather force everyone to change their own settings to accommodate your preferences than go along with a majority vote that has been discussed before.

Thank you, but it would still be nice if you (and anyone else who still has a moving avatar) would follow current forum policy now that the issue has been drawn to your attention. I personally find the "no rude words" policy irksome, but I follow it as a matter of courtesy to those who prefer not to see certain words on the forum.

From Wikipedia DS is "a popular forum with over 2,000 registered members". 24 voted against.

I think the way forumers handle the huge input of posts should be considered when important subjects are discussed. How many click on just one or two sections like me? Or unanswered posts only? The technical sections at the bottom are going to be far less popular unless someone has a problem or a suggestion.

"Get over it" is not democratic. And DS is a community after all.

Edited: not a response to Marigold's post..written as I was writing.
