Okay, for the record.
I'm Beth, my OH is Paul. We have a menagerie of land-rovers, Bears, computers, and a dog called Jake. We're currently building an enclosure in the garden for 2 ducks. We'd like Khaki Campbells. It was going to be chickens but one night we got talking over a glass of wine or two and both of us said we didn't actually like chickens all that much and ducks seemed more 'characterful'. We also prefer duck eggs. I also have an allotment, where I mostly grow weeds.
The allotment I've had since last spring. It came about in a roundabout way....
you could say it started on sunday 3rd feb 2002 at about 3 oclock in the afternoon. The momentous occasion was my OH's brain exploded. Well he had a hemorrhagic stroke. Although he was damn lucky and only has relatively limited ongoing problems it made us both think about what we really wanted in Life. Then in september of last year I was having problems worrying excessively about Paul, and was going down hill fast. The company I worked for was very unhelpful. So I walked out. Now I had the time, but not the money. That xmas I discovered The RCCB. By spring the garden was full of garlic, toms, and stuff I cant remember when someone suggested I should get an allotment. Despite mixed successes over the summer, I've been hooked.
Now I'm back at work in a much better company. They are really american, but due to the vagaries of business I can say I actually work for a swiss company (MIPS technologies, if any one is interested). Now I have the money but not the time. Sigh. Three days after I joined them our original dog Tilly (RIP) tipped over into terminal decline. We thought it better to ask the vet to call. So it turned out I was to rush back home hopefully before she arrived. The new company were brilliant, didn't bat-an-eyelid.
We missed Tilly soooo much that we soon went out looking for a new dog, pictures of him here: https://home.the-hug.net/photos/index.php?album=jake_20040922 and here https://home.the-hug.net/photos/index.php?album=jake_20041010
Paul, when he works, works from home, and writes database driven websites for people using his own content management engine.
Oh yes, for the 'wild food' angle I have an old HW77 air-rifle, and a much more modern Falcon FN19 with laser and night vision attachment. And have permission to hunt vermin (rabbits and rats mainly) over the allotments.

Sorry - it didn't occour to me I was being rude - so here goes.
I'm Anneka I live in East Sussex, I am married to Mat (4.5 years) we live with his mother at the moment and are very slowly building our own home here.
I have for sometime been interested in growing my own food (I think about 6 years) anyway my friends (who are now coming round to a similar way of thinking - after all the funny, funny jokes about the good life) kept buying me river cottage cookbooks (about 5 so far - you would of though just one of them would have thought to get me the Cook on the Wildside book - but No!) which led me to the website. Which in turn brought me here.
I have a few animals 4 goats, 2 sheep (which are pets - I can't eat lamb or mutton - as a sheep exploded on me as a child), 2 Glostershire Old Spot pigs (11 weeks old) which will be eaten in the future, chickens, 3 ducks (one of which I think is going to die soon - so I may have to do the deed, but she is 7 now) and a very cantankerous old goose.
I work part-time for a nursery/landscaping company and that my veggie patch and compost heap keep me busy. I also shoot, rough for pigeons and rabbits and clays and targets at local clubs.
I have studied forestry at the local Agricultural college - though I haven't quite finished yet !
I knit and read alot, I truley love being outdoors - when I'm not here that is - and I guess thats me - Pleased to meet you all!

Hi, my name's Andrew, I'm 28, 6 feet tall, blue eyes, brown hair and of medium build. I enjoy....
That bit is true, but I was thinking I was on a different site.
I'm generally becoming more rational in the things I consume - I only go to tesco once a month now and that's only for the kind of things that I can't get from my usual supplies (farmers markets, a local farm butcher + veg shop, and Booths supermarket for beer!)
Living alone it's quite easy food wise, but the more I look at my life the more I realise I don't need to do half the things I do - they're just habit. |
