Lettuce can act as a mild laxative, but given only occasionally will do no harm .Finely chopped chives are great for chicks.
I agree that salt should never be added to poultry rations. It is bad for them.
I hang green stuff (cabbage, cauli, sprout tops etc) up to give them something to peck at when they are in their winter quarters, occasionally I give grated swede or carrots too, but during spring and summer ,when there is so much natural greenery for them to peck at , I rarely bother. Mine are in moveable arks so they get fresh ground as soon as the area they are on looks a little bare.
Boiled spud etc can be a bit too fattening if given often, as can pasta but as a treat it will do no harm. I know it is ludicrous that you can't feed meat scraps when they are naturally omniverous and love worms , and bugs etc and mine have even eaten mice! But regs are regs, so if you intend to sell ,just don't feed meat!

It is quite odd, that one of the selling points of the free range/organic system is that they have access to creepcrawlies, but you can't give them a bit of meat. But you're absolutely right:

Gave the girlies a sliced apple on Sunday - didn't seem to appreciate it - just looked at it.

May have to go for the Bugs school of thought and over-calculate the amount of pasta/porridge we need to make and give the extra to the girlies.

The parsley in our garden is starting to grow well, have taken some round for them - they love it!

I offered mine a courgette but they just walked on it, clucking crossly!

Yes, but too many foxes at present, so I keep them in the garden. I may plant veggies in teh wood though. Just trying to locate a bench saw right now, so I can plank the timber.

It's like banging my head against a brick wall, nothing at all so far

Problem is wanting to live on the land, I've just seen an 18 acre wood for sale about 1/2 hr from me for 80,000 but it's not what I want

Worth the drive to check the saw out though. I can then also pick up the car from Jeff on the same trip. Its 171 miles.

What exactly are you looking to buy (my BIL used to be a chippie and has got loads of almost unused Elu stuff lying around)

Basically, a big bench saw, either circular or band saw, which will plank up timber up to about 12 inch diameter.
