Apparantly there is one member who uses Dartington Hives. Hope they are there on the 21st and willing to chat to me about them! I have just showed my hubby the the 'pov' version Kenyan hive and he likes it. A couple of old floorboards and a brush to buy. SOunds good to me!

Mrs B, your beekeeping tutor sounds awfully familiar. Are you with the one of the two groups meeting at Rainham by any chance?

Hedgehogpie - 'Fraid not! I am travelling up London way for my classes. It's a long way for me to go but it was the only course I could find that I could actually make it to.

Don't tell me there are two of them on the loose who are as bad as each other... does your guy ever answer a question? I am afraid to ask my guy a question... he prattles on for about half an hour about completely unrelated stuff and then simply changes the subject.

On the other hand, he is teaching me a LOT about bees, so I suppose I shouldn't moan.

No like bee drones they are bred from unfertilised eggs, no father.

Hi Dudes!
Just to add to the mix..........I have always kept mine in Nationals. However, this year we are going with 2 TBH's. We bought one from Thornes (some dosh going to Bees for Development), but ebaye'd one from down in Cornwall. The Thornes one is functional, but small....the one from a chap in Helston, Cornwall, is solidly made, big and relatively cheap (when compared to a National). The advantage of the cornish hive, is that it has a dividing board, and 2 entrances as standard.
Go for it, and ignore all bee nerds/old farts!

Too funny...

Honestly tho... he is SO doddery... he thought we wouldn't understand what he meant by measuring bees by the cupful. So he felt the need to demonstrat and proceeded to pour his tea all over his desk. No-one laughed really. We all just thought that he was pouring his tea all over his desk now.

I could go on. The stories I have... and we are only 3 weeks in...

Pilsbury - I am going up to Saf London which is a bit of a drive for me but it is lovely to get away from the kids.

Chortlepinkpants - Looks like your man in The Lizard makes a nice hive! I am pretty handy tho and think I would like to make my own. I'll enlist MrB of course...

It is a worry if they're all like that.

I don't like to ask too much either* because it's sooooo easy to tip him off into a reverie about nothing in particular and some of his opinions are well, let's say they're 'interesting'. He loves the Euopean contingent in our group though, because it gives him a chance to tell us all about his extensive travels to Germany,Latvia, Italy etc....

A very sweet man and obviously very knowledgable, but there are times during his talks when I feel a real need to practise my zen meditation techniques for fear of screaming out loud. The prospect of ending up with some bees compensates though and once the course is over you're pretty much your own man (or woman!).

Pilsbury, our course runs in Rainham near Gillingham, so just down the road from Dartford. You'd be able to get to it very easily. Please don't let my description of the tutor put you off if you want to learn, it's very worthwhile!

*Someone in Germany sent me a link for Abbe Warr hives, I nearly asked his opinion, but to be honest I'm pretty sure I can gauge it without bothering to - he's clearly a National man through and through.

Hedgehogpie - we won't end up like that though... will we? Chez seems to think we will but to be honest the thought scares me...

My guy had me counting the potato sacks lined up on the bench behind him last week. It was all too much for me and I tuned out a bit. Then he started talking in German. I don't speak German, but strangely it got my attention.

Do all beekeepers speak German? And go to Germany and Italy all the time? Is it like part of the uniform?? LOL.

BUT tomorrow is the big day where I will meet with my local beekeeping group (Weald) for the first time. I am excited about that so spare a thought for me about 3pm! I have girded my loins against the reaction to my TBH leanings in case they are less than positive.
