We were having a natter - as you do, as to what rifle hugh used last night on his stalking expedition (good to see- well done!), we came to the conclusion that it was a Scmitten Bender scope, probably a 8 x 56 on a Sako 243 rifle ( that had a screwthread for a mod) what do you rekon? stalker this one is for you

Did you see what weight bullet he used?

I was intereted in seeing the liver, was that just from the one animal?

If it were a .243 the bullet would weigh about 100grs or 6.5g. But unless they said, how do know it was .243? Were they shooting roe?

A Roe buck. Looked a small little fellow. They then spit roasted two whole animals and used pork fat to keep them moist.

The standard calibre for deer is 243, probably 100g - mind in dorset there are fallow deer as well - the guy with hugh looked like a traditional sort of fellow, roe deer stalking is fairly challenging , great bit of tv and good to see in these days of political correctness.

I must agree with you Mr DS. But you did see a bit of the deer being gralloched with Hugh's simple comments that the guts are left for the birds etc. It also had bees on the program but I'll stop now or I'll sound a bit like someone on you know where.

Interesting one that, it's illegal to leave deer pluck unburied! It seems BRC is now "spot the deliberate mistake!"

Cant honestly say that the programme 'rocks my boat' but its the best of whats available - at least he portrays it as it is (within limits of course).

I wont be buying one of his hampers or a signed book though...lol

You've got funny deer laws up there. In Scotland the law says you must use a bullet designed to deform in a predictable manner of not less than 100gr (6.48g) with a muzzle velocity of not less than 2450 ft/sec (746.78m/sec) and a muzzle energy of not less than 1000ft/lbs (1356 joules).

Yet on roe, you can use a bullet of not less than 50gr (3.24g) with a muzzle velocity of not less than 2450 ft/sec (746.78m/sec) and a muzzle energy of not less than 1000ft/lbs (1356 joules). This equates to .222 / .223 rifle.

In England & Wales, the smallest calibre you can legally use is the .240.

The most popular calibre is .308, but I only use a necked down .270 for all deer species, because it is very very powerful, has a very flat trajectory for long range and can knock a 300lb red stag ten feet backwards at 100m (I do like swift kills).

To be honest I consider the .243 a good fox gun (that's what Winchester developed it for). And I would never use it on reds, sika or fallow (the big three).

I would use the .270 on all deer species including muntjac & CWD.

The only thing I don't like / love about the .270, is the fact she is a very lively girl, and kicks like mule! If you shoot prone (as I've told Anneka) you slide back about a foot. And the number of black eyes I've had from the scope hitting on the brow, I'm too embarassed to count!

This should have been in "ballistics"
