does anyone know the legality of shooting pigeons in london - i have a real problem with them in my backyard - which is small, they shit all over my laundry and they are a nightmare.

I don't think there are any problems with shooting pigeons per se, but you will probably run up against the long arm of the law doing it in your back yard. Have you thought of trapping them instead?

They will probably be replaced with other pigeons, the best thing to do is check where they land and put the anti pigeon spikes up.

Fuel air explosion - dramatic, effective, but difficult to control and possibly of interest to anti-terrorist agencies. Not to be recomended.

Fuelled air burst? I love it. While were on a roll, lets nuke the moles on my garden, and napalm the slugs in the tunnel green house.

Except possibly to Hunter S Thompson... who would have greatly appreciated such a response to the dread threat of the urban pigeon.
Mind you, he wouldn't have asked before he started shooting...

thanks for your responses....our initial idea was to install a bird scaring device but the problem is the tree is very tall (>60ft) and not in our garden (the branches overhang). It might be possible to get a ladder this tall and install this but will be difficult.....this is probably the best solution in the long run but this is a last resort....

Assuming we are using a bb gun and shooting directly up (so any shot will go up and come back down in our garden) and just to scare (by hitting leaves rather than birds) then is this still illegal?

We have also seen some inaudible bird scaring devices (i.e. produces scarey noises only heard by birds)....has anybody any experience of these?

failing this....does anybody know Ken Livingstones home number and whether he would object to scaring birds with bb guns/fuel air explosions?

I have similar problems with both pigeons and tree rats (squirrels) - in that they out compete the other fauna. My bird feeder has a bell of thick wire mesh over the central cylindrical feeder. The holes in the mesh are too small for pigeons and squirrels to get in to the seed. The problem with shooting is that there are so many pigeons in London that any you kill will just get replaced.

Are you on sufficiently good terms with your neighbour for there to be a chance that you could have the offending overhanging branches removed? Then the pigeons would only be able to crap on his side

Assuming no tree protection orders or similar, my understanding is that one is legally entitled to cut off any branches overhanging your property - but you should be returning all the offcut branches to your neighbour, they belong to him, so taking them without permission would be theft.
But if that's what you plan to do, a quiet word in advance would do no harm to neighbourly relations...
