Should have added :-
Found large quantity today growing on large broken (but alive) beech. Found similar last week on dead Horse chestnut. Smell mushroomy/mealy. Rubbery texture. Awaiting spore print.
ANother picture.

Looks good, sounds right, spore print will help. How are they inside? Practically all of the larger ones I've found recently had 'inhabitants'.

Thanks, folks.
Spore print very pale pink/lilac. No "inhabitants" but thanks for warning. Will try frying a few.

Definately oysters, nice size too.

You can freeze them in butter but don't try drying them, it doesn't work.

I use them in Chinese stir frys and stews, my golden rule is to either cook them quickly if they're not in a sauce or a long time if you want to stew them, they work well with dried shittake's or Jelly Ear.

A word rarely used in online mushroom identification

But its pretty much got to be a Pleurotus.

Pleurotus Ostreatus
Rogers Mushrooms says white, cream or yellowish in headnote but lilac in text.
see https://www.rogersmushrooms.com/gallery/DisplayBlock~bid~6651~source~gallerychooserresult.asp
Another book I have also says lilac.
Anyhow I ate them, they were delicious, no ill-effects
