Any suggestions for a more sustainable method?

Had toyed with the idea of using trip wire alarm mines on the lotty.
You have to provide a notice and make sure the 12 bore blanks fire towards the ground, but of course the neighbours are more likely to ring the police for a gun shot than an alarm!
They're about eight or nine quid I think!

Planting mines seems a harsh thing to do, but we must remember that in an economically challenged area like Kamchatka theft of vegetables is not a minor matter. I am not being judgmental in this matter.

A matter serious enough that he was given a suspended sentence. In this country, they'd give him ten years just for the land mines, then a few more on top for attempted murder. Causing injury to defend your property is regarded in the UK as much more serious than going out to rob with violence. I think it's some sort of 'closed shop' arrangement to keep the police in a job.

If I had my way, it would be a warning notice, and then gloves off. Bouncing Betties, punji holes, take your pick.
