Not wanting to imply anything, but please check where you're fishing. There are a lot of problems at the moment with people fishing from/in nature reserves...often with a taste for carp and claiming not to understand English I gather most rivers are covered by angling clubs too?

Try page one of the Environment Agency North West Fisheries Byelaws.

"Anyone, irrespective of their age, fishing for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels with any instrument other than rod and line, in these waters, must have a licence issued by the Environment Agency"

Requiring a license does not make a thing illegal. Thanks for the link though.

Coming back a point or few, I think the waterways of Britain are a massively underutilised resource, particularly in terms of food production. It would not take a lot to massively increase yield.
Presumably the anglers would be against this idea though: if the rivers were full of fish, then it would take away the challenge.

ea rod licence covers most conversations

size and date regs are for a reason ,big trout use small ones as harvesters before they eat them and then spawn some more

some waters have a no return policy for some species ,most are harm and return for all .i dont like keeping fish to amuse in a catch ,photo ,return way .i could say bad words about that

haul it in ,kind death ,dinner or swim with it and watch ,
why do peeps want to catch and return ,if i did it with blackbirds or kittens id get locked up

there are laws preventing the catching and taking of certain spesiece of fish for the table in this country. Course fish are a no,no. Trout,salmon,grayling when in season, but you should always check with your local angling club
