Hi All,
My Wife and I are new to downsizer and fairly new to the downsizer concept/reality having moved from the midst of South East Surburbia to North Cornwall a little over a 18 months ago. We have a small plot of land and are looking forward to achieving as much as we can with it over the coming weeks, months and years.

We decided to start our education here at Downsizer
Hoping to learn lots and contribute wherever possible as we make a start to upon our life changing journey and look forward to hearing from people who are on their own journeys of varying sorts.

Maybe a good moment to start with a question...
We'd be interested to learn what weight of feed pr pig (nuts or otherwise) we could expect an animal to consume from birth to slaughter weight (whatever that may be - info greatly received here too!)?
Thanks All. Rgds, Pete

Excellent, excellent. Croeso from west Wales Pete.
So, speaking of education, how's your punctuation?

Oi M-J, let them get settled first before you start looking for rogue apostrophe's

(Ducks quickly & scuttles for the door!)

pops back in to add: "Welcome to Downsizer", then ducks out again

Hi Pete

Roughly what part of North Cornwall?

I might be best to ask your pig feed question in the livestock section as not everyone will see in here.

I saw it!

A pig will eat about a pound of pig nuts for every month old it is, every day. So a pound a day for the first month, two pounds a day for the second month, and so on, up to six months old, when they peak. Slaughter would normally be around six to eight months, depending on time, their size, weather, your freezer space etc etc.

It's a rough rule of thumb, and you should allow more for when they escape, steal the food, need to be bribed back in, marauding crows and rats, and your own, backstabbing, stealing dogs.

Seemingly not good enough for you.
Strange, I thought the forum section was titled 'Welcome'?
Oh well, thanks for commenting anyway I'm sure you think you understand your purpose for commenting even if I don't.

Kind of what he said, you hold the pig back longer depending on breed and if you want it for bacon weight or not. Some rare breeds take longer to finish than others; certain crosses finish quicker whereas others don't it can be simply luck of the draw. You don't want an over fat pig unless you like a lot of fat on your meat but the fat you can be used in other things so it's not always a bad outcome.

Some breeds of pig run to fat quickly so you have to keep an eye on their feeding.

It's easier than it sounds.

Hello and welcome

Hiya, roughly between Bude and Launceston.

Thanks for the heads up, been hear about 15 minutes so still getting my bearings I'll look up the livestock section shortly. I'm sure there will be plenty of archive material that will prove useful. Thanks again.

M-J was teasing! If you want to get your own back, just add a few greengrocers' apostrophes or misplaced commas to your reply, it will work a treat and act as a birthday present for her as well!
