Not that I'm making any claims at the moment: I've concluded that the press is badly flawed...

"they" = Tesco (as the quote you were talking about was from their packaging/marketing stuff) Their claims that the seed is "specially selected" at "optimum maturity" - I would guess that it would be difficult to prove that this is true for all bottles in all cases.

As I think I said, most crops are selected at optimum maturity, but "specially selected" implies something above and beyond normal... I wonder what is special about it.

You could always tweet them, although they do seem more bothered about Downton Abbey at the moment.

No, I do believe they are working on it...

I suspect it is just marketing drivel which they never expected to get asked about, so now they have to think up something convincing...

I've got an answer. Apparently they have a taste test to choose the suppliers, and a quality test at the seed store before pressing.

Well I reckon the press I bought was a lemon: I could not get the yield up over about 15% no matter what I did.

So I tried modifying the press: that sort of worked: I got a much improved yield, but the modifications could not take the strain. The press is at the engineer's now...

But that still leaves me a problem: the improved yield has also given me much finer particulates in the oil: it comes out a mucky grey colour rather than a nice golden yellow.

I've left it to settle for a few weeks with minimal effect, and I've put it through a 1 micron filter and it still looks mucky.

I've not (yet) found a sensible supplier of filters less than 1 micron...

Any ideas?

That had not occurred to me... I'll go get a magnet in a moment.

But I don't think so. I am fairly sure that it is just ground up seed...
