Pondering the 1000 killed in Gaza thread, I wondered if anyone else is watching The Honourable Woman.

A pretty good cast including Maggie Gyllenhaal, Stephen Rea, Tobias Menzies (excuse me while I swoon, although I preferred him as Brutus in Rome) and Andrew Buchan (Broadchurch).

Watched episode one

That got more and more ludicrous as it went on, watched ten minutes of episode 2 that confirmed it wasn't going to get any better and I bailed out then from wasting any more of my life.

Interesting. I'm enjoying it - well, enjoying isn't perhaps the right word.

Ok, so it may be a bit overacted but it's made me look properly at the history of the conflict and understand a bit more than I did a few weeks ago.

Thinking I might be a tad strange (I am) I Googled to find I'm not the only one; from the Guardian website:

Points for hanging in there and then bothering to analyse. This is tosh dressed up as class. The Emperor has been lending his clothes out again. Director, writer, producer--one and the same. The Poliakoff syndrome. Some good actors doing their best and sometimes managing to salvage something from the grinding boredom of it. Eight hours? Maybe worth two with a fresh pair of eyes--or maybe not.

I so agree with you. I watched part of week 1 and week 2 but got bored on both occasions. A slow and ponderous imitation of Homeland. The killing of the FBI agent summed it all up for me - too clever by half and for what purpose? A terribly contrived 'drama' using the gravity of the Middle East situation to hide its essential triviality.

I usually defend 'slow', but this was pushing it. I glanced at my watch at 9.30, and when I looked again I couldn't believe only five minutes had passed (possibly while Nessa and Bloom were giggling at each other). Once again all the action was crammed into the last few minutes; and I'm afraid my response to Bloom's murder was "Well, he's really dead this time"; and to hope that he and his woolly sweater weren't going to be made into burgers.

and best of all

It's becoming a Carry on up the Middle East.
It's so contrived and bogus arty, it's a job to watch it without laughing.
The speeches .. And they are speeches... are delivered with all the vim of an accountant with a cough.
And yes,,thanks.. We've heard that Wailing woman singing in every film and programme west of Clacton for the last five years.
The pace of it is the well-named Shlomo, a cut-out villan who simply should have a moustache to twiddle

I'm afraid I'm out.

We're watching it EV and quite enjoying it. If there is some political message in there, it's going straight over my head as it's just TV drama.
