The PSU on my PC has packed up.
I had an old PSU kicking about and I tried that, but it went 'bang' as soon as I put power to it: that suggests to me there is a significant fault on the motherboard, but it is also possible that the other PSU was duff: it has been sat on a shelf in the basement for months.

I'm reluctant to risk another PSU, but I'm also reluctant to bin the board without a bit more of a check that it is dead.

Anyone know of any appropriate tests?

Does it seem likely a motherboard would blow a psu? Sounds counterintuitive to me.

That was indeed my first thought, but my subsequent thought was that if something on the board has become a short circuit, then it might, but that's sounding even sillier now that I come to put it in writing...

If anybody has any knowings on this that go better than intuition, then they might be helpful to persuade the dealer to give me a new PSU.

Nothing obvious.

There are something like 20 pins on the power connector: I'm not sure it's that straightforward... though I think it resolves down to only 3 or 4 rails, so worth a try.

I've had another opinion that concurs with Nick and I've remembered a scrap PC at the back of a cupboard: assuming it has a working PSU then it'll be no great loss if that one blows as well.

A quest for a missing toy turned up a PSU and it seems to work... except that it has the wrong connectors for the hard drives... I may have an adapter here somewhere.
