A good idea. I have managed to keep more or less on top of the nettles this year, so no nettle bucket. If the weather is dry enough today, I need to get out and do some weeding though.

Where the blackberries are growing I have left it to go wild. Though someone did come along a few weeks ago with a strimmer.

My nettle and comfrey feed is now 2 years old. Of course I keep topping it up with fresh nettles and comfrey every year.

My grapevine has reach the end of my greenhouse and has turned around. Should I leave it to do its own thing or should I cut the end off?

snipping does seem involved in viniculture

i have no idea when or where to cut grape vines

you could tip the end and get two leaders to be trained back along the outside edges
i have seen them lead round like that so as the main stem does ridge and the two branches run back to the vertical main stem inside the eaves

i have seen them stopped at the end with fruiting side branches

the type of vine and local conditions might be important for best choice

research is required sir, but it looks a healthy plant which should thrive

before it gets big and laden with heavy fruit, get some fixings in the metal for strong wires to support it, a centre spar to brace the sides might be wise if you hope for a decent fruit crop

my bramble is on 300kg breaking strain stainless steel wire rope, thin but strong
it has snapped once

Thanks for that DPack.

I thought it wasn't going to come back to life this year and then it just took off. I'll get you a picture of the other end of the vine. It's like a monster.

At the moment it is supported by the 3 braces that connect near the top of the greenhouse, with a plank of wood running across the braces. Next year I'll get some wire in as well, just to give it some extra support as I am expecting great things from it.

Good lord! How may blackberries were on the thing?

I grow a grape vine in our greenhouse, and find I have to keep it well nipped back or it disputes my right to enter the greenhouse. Ours has the roots outside, so it can grow rather vigorously.

I would suggest cutting the end in the winter when it is dormant, but it depends on how you want to grow it. As Dpack says, research into methods of growing are needed. I run mine as a single stem along the ridge, with fruiting side shoots, so I cut back each year and let it grow each year, but pinch out once a bunch has started on a side shoot. That way it stays under control and I get fruit. Make sure it has plenty of water while the grapes are forming and getting larger otherwise they have a tendency to split and rot. Thinning of the fruit in the bunch is also needed.

The old way of feeding a grapevine,hence having the roots outside was blood.

Thank you MR. The roots are outside as well. The vine is for eaters, so I don't need a multitude of bunches. Your method is sounding good to me. So I am more than happy to follow your lead.

Ty, how much should I give it? An arm full? Do you mix blood with water, or just pour it on neat?

spray dried in a bag, with or without fish and bone meal, is convenient

good for most fruit trees, bushes and vines

tis best to ferment it (see mixture) but sprinkled as dust and watered in is ok if you avoid leaves and stems of the plants you are feeding

even a bit of dust on a damp leaf will cause the leaf to die, so it can be used for weed suppression around fruit plants

a handful of BFB on a compost heap will activate a variety of things that make good compost

re the blood sacrifice thing, yep, it will improve the fruit crop
