We have recently acquired 3 chickens. To make life simpler, we have converted a stable, given them plastic nesting boxes mounted on the wall, an auto pop hole and plastic omelette perches, huge feeder & auto-drinker outside - pretty much automates our chicken keeping so that it doesn't matter if we are not here.

I have named them as follows:

The Speckledy: Dotty
The Chalk-hill Blue (looks like an Aracauna cross): Goldie
The Columbian Blacktail: Molly (yes it was intentional).

automating the simple stuff makes lots of sense.

it is worth cleaning the slides of the pop hole regularly to ensure it does not stick half open and if it is battery powered make sure you replace them before they get flat

my treadle feeder was ace but it did tend to get food under the treadle which needed sweeping out now and again for hygiene and so as it still opened the hopper door when they step on it.

Absolutely.

Fortunately, the auto opener has the option of battery or USB to the mains.

i could not use mains unless i had run a commando cable direct from about half a mile away but i did have pv for the fencing/cow proofing and winch

duracells for the door stuff got changed monthly and then did torch duty etc. not ideal but it worked.

i recon if i was going away for a few days (or more) i might go for batteries or a pv/battery bank rig and the usb power input.

a power outage or whatever can trip your consumer unit etc etc .

considering some of my dirty 4 dozen and your sociopathic turkey have you thought about keeping them "in" for the safety of the public and wildlife

The turkey is no more. Poor Clyde, he was a very misunderstood darling. He never attacked me, it was just everyone else that was a problem.

So far our chickens have had a go at the crows, partridge, guinea fowl (there seems to be a truce at present) and the pheasants.

quite right you can't just get one , ostriches are are flock critters, an ostrich would be cruel

umm , im not sure about the other two but even if they are a bit like hamsters they will wan't a "friend" now and again to help provide a 12 covers omelette and a jam pot or a roast for a village.

Mr Shan did once arrive home to a flock of sheep, so he's somewhat wary these days.

Let's just say he's taking far too much notice of what I'm interested in, lest he arrives home to half a dozen unexpected arrivals...
