I cordially challenge all here who have yet to try Jerusalem artichokes to do so in the following week. See if your greengrocer or local market has them, and give them a shot. They're delicious boiled, mashed, roasted, as a soup, and there are all sorts of other good ways of eating them.

Umm - how can I put this delicately... I love Jerusalem Artichokes, but they don't.. um... love me, a definate chemical reaction which is unpleasant for all concerned

Sonorous, but not malodorous, I find.

Think of it as being like garlic - if you all have some, no one will notice!

never had one before. Can I just mash it and serve it lik eyou would mashed potato? do you add butter?

Yes. You can do anything to an artichoke that you would do to a potato - and then some more. They are nice just sliced and eaten raw, for example. They are a bit sweeter and with a slightly nutty taste.

You can. Best boiled in the skins, then either mash them skins and all or squeeze them out. They're softer than spuds, and make a nice gooey mash. Little bit of butter and some pepper make them even better, but I'd add those to my spuds too...

Funny thing is, we had a big Jerusalem artichoke curry on Tuesday. No flatulence to speak of... A little googlong brought up this site:

Remedies - (Mechanical)

In social situations where the sound of flatulence would be particularly inappropriate a temporary remedy can be obtained by placing a piece of cotton wool or paper tissue about 4 cm in diameter onto the anus. If this is done whilst squatting then closure of the buttocks will hold it in place for a considerable period of time. This keeps the anus dry and reduces the velocity of the gas discharge, both of which prevent noisy events.

That is absolutely classic
