Just managed to speak to the guy who heads the Eastern England deer group for the FC. He says that rabbit proof fencing may do the job but in any case I need to find a local stalker who'll be able to nip in whenever he's passing, he's going to get some numbers for me and is hopefully going to be seeing me on the 3rd January.

So some progress...

But I take it you can never eat them?

Sounds like a fantastic opportunity, you have the acreage and the reason for being approved for a fac. Joining a local club should help you get training and assist the application.

I'd go for it in your position. They're a destructive and non-indigenous species, and you'd be able to eat them. It's a win-win situation. Unless you're a muntjac.

Had a great day with a man from the Forestry Commission's Deer Initiative yesterday. We walked round the whole place inspecting tracks, looking at turds, smelling, that sort of thing. Really enjoyed it.

Anyway the outcome is that we have a single muntac living on site, he couldn't find any evidence of others coming into this one's territory, he says the biggest problem (apart from the rabbits) is going to be the hares, apparently we've got a huge population.

He reckons the badgers would go through the stock proof fencing anyway so he reckons 1m tree guards should be all I need.

Where's the relief emoticon? (No NL and B, not that kind of relief...)

You need a hare net.

I'm glad that you're relieved.

I could make a joke about sniffing turds but as we actively clean and polish 1,000,000s of things each day I feel I shouldn't.

Hare net might not be such a joke you know. Long netting is an old fashioned way of controlling hare numbers, and providing some excellent food for the table too.

But then he'd need a long dog, and Tahir doesn't like dogs.

Well, I hope he likes hares then

There are other ways of controlling hares, of course. I'd rather eat hare than deer, a hare overpopulation would certainly get me looking for a way of getting them into the pot.

Remember a while ago when we had the thing about eating hare some places in the UK are finding them rare, I take it that's not the case in Essex then (ie we're not encouraging Tahir to singlehandedly wipe out a wildlife paradise in the name of a tasty stew?)
