Would this be of interest? I'm new to the site but keen to contribute. I note that there has already been an article on eggonomics (as those of you from RC.net know, I've been interested in this area too. I noticed that there was a post asking about the economics of chicken keeping, but there seems to be no article.

Do you think this would be worth doing?

I think it would be worth doing, if any article is too similar it may be worth contacting the other author or the editor first. I've done a few of the chicken keeping articles and although they contain general facts they are very much my and my OH's experience and I would be more than happy to have the same sort of article done by other people.

Who are you?

Oops - sorry. I hadn't realised I wasn't logged in.

The angle I was thinking of putting on it was purely about whether you can make it economically sensible - whether small-scale (for the household only) chicken rearing for meat is a good financial decision as well as a good gastronomic one. I'm not planning on dealing with the whys and hows of doing it. That's for the experienced folk!

Assuming this is of interest and goes ahead, I'd welcome any PMs from people who have tried it and would be willing to share their spending experiences - you'll get quoted (unless you'd rather not be).

I think it would be useful, although I expect that the financial reason isn't at the heart of most peoples reason for doing it.

Sounds like a good idea to me, I've not kept chickens but have often wondered how much a home reared chicken would actually cost.

I would agree that it probably isn't most people's main reason, but it's still useful to have some idea of the costs etc. involved. I think it would make a good article.

I think it would be very interesting - the only one it's similar to is Fiddlesticks Julie's but as you say that's about eggs and people often keep them just for that, while meat is a different subject altogether.

I'll keep an eye out for any useful info for you, and we vaguely know some people who started with chickens for eggs and have now gone in to eating them, I'll see if we can find out anything from them. There certainly are a few people on here who keep them for meat as well - do stick your question on the poultry section too!

Thanks for the encouragement. I think it would be interesting to include a survey of people who keep chickens for meat in the article, asking why they started doing it - perhaps I could put a poll on the chicken forum and see what I get for answers. Do you think it would be a good idea to put one on RC.net too? Would they mind? There would be overlap so I'd have to ask people to answer only one.

I think best to just do one here in the interests of maintaining a seperate identity.

Yep best to avoid the risk of treading on toes.

Will do. Sorry to keep forgetting to log in - I have now set it to remember me whenever I visit, so hopefully I won't keep turning up as "Guest".
